OpenID? What if big guys don’t want open?

I know OpenID only from a few days ago. After I read what it is about, I was surprised how I missed this great feature before. According to what the OpenID Foundation says:

“OpenID eliminates the need for multiple usernames across different websites, simplifying your online experience.

You get to choose the OpenID Provider that best meets your needs and most importantly that you trust. At the same time, your OpenID can stay with you, no matter which Provider you move to. And best of all, the OpenID technology is not proprietary and is completely free.”

I imagine that I can choose whatever OpenID provider I trust, get an OpenID there with my identity information, and after that, this ID will become my Internet passport, my only Web identity card. I can carry it to whatever new website, and expect gatekeeper says to me:”You’ve got your ID. That is perfect. Let me create account for you. Here you go!” What a wonderful scenario!

I also learn that many big players have become sponsoring members of OpenID Foundation. That must be good thing.

I rushed to some big guys’ website, looking for OpenID Logon form, only with disappointment. They don’t support logon with OpenID, no one at all. But, they do offer their account name as OpenID for you to use in other small websites.

Now I think I understand why I didn’t hear about OpenID before.
